Pathways to Equity: Trust-Based Philanthropy
Trust-based philanthropy has gained sector-wide attention as a strategy to alleviate power imbalances between funders and grantee partners. Driven by the central philosophy that funders should approach grantee relationships as learning partnerships, a trust-based approach encourages multi-year unrestricted funding, streamlined reporting, and transparent and responsive communication. This is a critical step in leveling the playing field, but how can funders leverage trust-based philanthropy to address some of the most pervasive inequities in our sector -- especially those facing people of color, rural communities, and other marginalized groups?
In this session, Hanh Le, Executive Director of the Weissberg Foundation in Arlington, VA, and Shaady Salehi, Director of the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project, share how individual behaviors and institutional practices can contribute to (in)equity, along with practical examples of how a trust-based approach can help our sector repair the structural inequities that are holding us back.
