Goodness Matters Breakout Session: Sharing Power to Advance Impact: The Promise of Trust-Based Philanthropy

  • 2:00-2:45 PM PT Virtual (map)

This breakout session is part of the 2022 Goodness Matters Conference by Benevity, June 1-3, 2022 in San Diego, CA. While some conference offerings are available virtually, this session is offered only in-person.

While advancing opportunity and building thriving communities are values that drive many companies' CSR programs, corporate philanthropy can sometimes work counter to these values by imposing restrictive, compliance-oriented practices on nonprofits. Trust-based philanthropy addresses this values-to-practice gap by centering multi-year unrestricted funding, streamlined paperwork, and a priority on building mutually accountable relationships. Fundamentally, this approach flips the script on conventional philanthropy so that nonprofits have the agency and support they need to innovate, grow, and achieve impact. This means that how you fund matters just as much as who or what you fund -- which ultimately strengthens the effectiveness of your efforts and brings them into greater alignment with your company’s core values.

In this session we will explore what it looks like to embody trust-based philanthropy, and the benefits that emerge when grantmaking practitioners invest the time and energy to fully embrace a trust-based approach in grantmaking, culture-building, and overarching CSR efforts. Attendees will walk away with insights and tactical advice for how to take steps toward embracing trust-based practices in their work.

Speakers:

  • Georgette Bhathena, Senior Program Manager, Social Impact, Zoom Video Communications

  • Caitlan Cole, Collaboration Coordinator, Trust-Based Philanthropy Project
